How to Choose the Right Acupuncture Needles

How to Choose the Right Acupuncture Needles

There are many things to take into account when creating a treatment plan for your patients but one of the most important has got to be the type of needle you use.

There is a huge variety of choice with needles and with so many to choose from, it can be difficult to ensure that you’ve got the right types.

Here are a few things you need to consider when choosing which acupuncture needles to use:

  • Needle length
  • Needle gauge
  • Needle type
  • Trigger points
  • Patient preference

Type

When it comes to choosing the type of needle you need, it will depend upon your practice. Do you specialise in auricular acupuncture or electro-acupuncture for instance?

Length

When choosing the length for an acupuncture needle, consideration needs to be given towards the part of the body where it will be inserted. Shorter needles are used for shallow areas where there is little tissue beneath the skin and are perfect for facial and auricular acupuncture.

Longer needles are usually used in parts of the body where there is significantly more muscle and fat. The depth of insertion does not just correspond to the area though, but also the desired treatment.

Gauge

Perhaps the hardest choice to make is the gauge of the needle. While type and length can be straightforward, the gauge is very dependent upon the treatment plan, the area and the patient’s comfort level.

Ultra-fine needles are best for sensitive areas or patients who are uncomfortable with the idea of needles. Thicker gauge needles are better for large muscles and for patients who are experienced or unfazed by acupuncture needling.

              Face and ears

Our Renew range here at Meridius is specifically designed for face, ear and scalp acupuncture. With needle gauges of 0.16mm, 0.20mm and 0.22mm, these ultra-fine needles are perfect for sensitive, delicate areas. Each box comes with 1000 needles so there’s no faffing around with extra boxes.

              Traditional acupuncture

With a range of gauges between 0.20mm and 0.40mm, our Pure range takes the silicone-free route. Ideal for use alone or with moxa, this range features copper wire handles. This also allows it to be used for electro-acupuncture.

With lengths ranging from 15mm to 40mm, these needles offer an excellent flexibility for the acupuncture practitioner to choose the appropriate depth and gauge required for the patient.

Modern features

Our Jet range of acupuncture needles offer one of the widest ranges we sell and are extremely popular.

Starting at the ultra-narrow gauge of 0.12mm and going right up to 0.30mm, Jet acupuncture needles are some of the easiest needles to use. Complete with a guide tube, even for the most sensitive of areas, the Jet needles are straightforward to use without bending.

Silicone-Free

Both our Eco range and Pure range are silicone free which means that not only can they be used in conjunction with moxibustion and electro-acupuncture but they are also suitable for patients with silicone allergies.
